Keratin Treatment vs Brazilian Blowout: What MAK Salon Clients Actually Need to Know

Marie Maksuti

Almost every week at MAK Salon on Mill Road, a client sits down at Marie's chair, pulls up a humid-day photo on her phone, and asks some version of the same question: "Should I do a keratin treatment, or is the Brazilian Blowout the one I want?" Usually she has read a few articles, talked to a friend who swears by one, and is now more confused than when she started.

We get it. The two services get lumped together constantly, even by people who should know better. They are not the same treatment. They do not work on the same hair the same way, they do not last the same amount of time, and they absolutely do not feel the same once you walk out of the salon. Here is the honest breakdown we give our Scarsdale, Bronxville, and Larchmont clients when they ask.

The two treatments are solving slightly different problems.

A Brazilian Blowout coats the hair. Think of it as a protective layer that smooths the cuticle, cuts frizz, and adds shine without dramatically changing how your hair behaves. You still get movement. You still get your wave or your curl, just a softer, more controlled version of it. Clients who want to keep their natural texture but stop fighting humidity every July tend to love this one.

A keratin treatment (we offer Lasio Keratin and Magic Sleek at MAK) goes further. It actually restructures how the hair lays. You get smoother, straighter, and significantly more manageable hair. If your natural texture is coarse, thick, or aggressively curly and your goal is a sleek blowout in twenty minutes instead of an hour, this is the category you want. Magic Sleek in particular is the one we reach for when a client tells us she has tried every smoothing product on the market and her hair still does not cooperate.

Neither one is better. They are answers to different questions.

Your hair type usually picks the treatment for you.

When Marie or Eli sits down for a consultation, the first thing we are looking at is your actual hair, not the photo of someone else's hair you brought in.

Fine to medium hair with some wave and frizz: Brazilian Blowout is almost always the right call. It will not flatten your hair or strip the body out of it. You will still have shape. You will just stop fighting it.

Thick, coarse, or curly hair that you blow out straight anyway: A keratin treatment, usually Lasio or Magic Sleek depending on how much smoothing you actually want. Clients who do this once tell us their morning routine drops from forty-five minutes to ten.

Color-treated hair, especially balayage or highlights: Both can work, but we are extra careful here. A keratin service done over fresh highlights can shift your tone if the wrong product is used. This is one of the reasons we do not rush these consultations. If you just had color done with us, we will usually time the smoothing service around it intentionally.

Damaged or over-processed hair: Neither treatment is a repair service, no matter what the internet tells you. If your hair is genuinely compromised, we are going to talk about Olaplex, K18, and Milbon booster treatments first. Smoothing services on truly damaged hair can make breakage worse, and we would rather tell you that honestly than book a service that disappoints you.

Longevity and maintenance are not the same between the two.

A Brazilian Blowout typically lasts about 10 to 12 weeks on our clients. It fades out gradually, which is something a lot of people actually prefer. There is no harsh demarcation line growing in. Your hair just slowly returns to its natural behavior, and you come back in when you feel it.

A keratin treatment, depending on which one and how you care for it, can last anywhere from 3 to 5 months. Magic Sleek tends to be on the longer end. Both require sulfate-free shampoo at home. We will send you out with the right products or recommend exactly what to pick up. If you wash with a drugstore clarifying shampoo for two weeks, you will strip the treatment faster, and then you will be frustrated, and we will both be sad about it.

One more honest note: the first 48 to 72 hours after a keratin service matter. No ponytails, no tucking behind the ears, no clips, no workouts that get your scalp sweaty. The Brazilian Blowout is more forgiving on this front. You can wash it the same day. That difference alone is sometimes the deciding factor for our busier clients.

Price, time, and what to expect in the chair.

Both services are a real time commitment. Plan for roughly two to three hours, sometimes longer if your hair is very long or very thick. We do not rush these. Rushing a smoothing service is how you get patchy results, and patchy results on a treatment that lasts months is not something anyone wants to live with.

Pricing varies based on length, density, and which specific treatment we are using. Rather than quote a number that may not apply to your hair, we would rather have you come in for a quick consultation or call the salon directly. Marie has been doing this for over 15 years, and her pricing reflects the product quality and the time the service actually takes. We use professional-grade formulations, not the discount versions you see advertised online.

In the chair, expect a wash, the product application section by section, a processing period, a thorough blow-out, and (for keratin services) flat-ironing to seal everything in. It is a long appointment. Bring a book. Most of our clients tell us they forget about their inbox for a few hours, which is honestly half the point of being here.

How we decide with you at the consultation.

We do not pick the treatment before we see you. The consultation is where it gets decided, and we ask real questions: How do you wear your hair most days? How much time do you spend on it in the morning? What is your color history? Are you planning a wedding, a vacation, a big event? How does your hair behave in August versus February?

Sometimes a client comes in convinced she wants a Brazilian Blowout and leaves having booked Magic Sleek because that is genuinely the better fit for her hair. Sometimes it goes the other way. Marie will tell you honestly. If neither service is right for you right now (because of damage, recent color, or just unrealistic expectations) she will tell you that too. That is the whole point of how we built this salon.
